The Challenge

Data Realm set out to relaunch its website as part of a broader rebranding initiative. The goal was to create a site that:

  • Delivered a pixel-perfect representation of bespoke Figma designs.

  • Allowed marketing and content teams to publish without developer intervention.

  • Supported flexible layouts for case studies, events, and landing pages without being constrained by templates.

Off-the-shelf website builders were quick to deploy, but they required design compromises, lacked the control needed for custom layouts, and made it too easy for content authors to inadvertently break formatting. Many times, these site builders solved for these limitation was with custom JavaScript, which required bringing a developer back in whenever this was needed.  As the site complexity grew, it introduced maintainability risks, and is not a sustainable model for long-term support.

Data Realm needed a solution that combined creative freedom, content governance, and future-proof maintainability.

The Solution

Leveraging its in-house development expertise and our partnership with Storyblok, Data Realm implemented a headless CMS architecture with:

1. Custom Front-End & Component Library

  • Built a React + Next.js front end consuming content from Storyblok’s headless CMS.

  • Created custom reusable components (e.g., feature blocks, navigation, footer) designed specifically for Data Realm’s needs—IP that can now be reused for future client projects.

2. Performance-First Deployment

  • Deployed as a static site via Netlify for optimal performance and cost efficiency.

  • Enabled a hybrid model to incorporate dynamic content (e.g., real-time pricing) when needed.

  • Integrated webhooks so publishing in Storyblok automatically triggers a site rebuild, going live within minutes.

3. Structured Content Models & Governance

  • Implemented rigid content structures for consistency in case studies, testimonials, and event pages.

  • Configured role-based permissions and approval workflows to protect brand integrity.

  • Leveraged Storyblok’s version history and rollback features for full auditability.

4. Integrated Asset & Data Management

  • Managed all images, videos, and documents in Storyblok’s built-in digital asset manager with CDN delivery for speed.

  • Enabled integration with external data sources such as e-commerce catalogs from Shopify or BigCommerce.

The Result

By combining custom development with Storyblok’s headless flexibility, Data Realm achieved:

  • Full design control without the compromises of templated site builders.

  • Faster content publishing—marketing teams now update and publish pages independently.

  • Lower long-term costs by avoiding expensive template restrictions and reusing custom components.

  • Improved governance with workflows, permissions, and a clear separation of content and presentation.

  • A growing library of reusable Storyblok components—from navigation elements to feature blocks—that can be quickly adapted for other client projects, accelerating delivery timelines and reducing development effort.

  • Scalability to expand into multi-channel experiences or integrate additional data sources in the future.

Uncompromised Technology

Storyblok gave us the flexibility to build a fast, modern website without compromising on content control. Our developers appreciated the structured approach and powerful APIs, while our marketing team finally got a visual editor that’s intuitive and efficient. It’s the rare platform that truly supports both speed and storytelling.

They often function as separate systems, CMS for content, eCommerce for product and transactional data. Yet, smart integrations allow the two to share information when needed (e.g., embedding product listings within marketing pages). Typically, this is done via APIs or plugins that sync CMS and commerce data.

Headless architecture can enhance security because the CMS and storefront are separated, the can reduce potential attack surfaces. Since front end and backend scale independently, businesses can optimize performance and handle increased load without risking disruptions to backend operations.

Businesses benefit from flexibility to use modern JavaScript frameworks (like React, Vue, or Next.js), better performance via server or static-side rendering, and improved scalability. Plus, the decoupled model simplifies API-driven integrations across multiple channels, boosting both developer productivity and user experience.

While headless offers flexibility and customization, it also introduces complexity. Smaller businesses or those content with standard templates and limited resources may find traditional platforms more efficient and cost-effective. Headless systems require developers for the initial launch and clear architectural planning. If you are unsure if headless is right for you, contact us and we can help you make an informed decision.
