The Challenge

Trimble’s SketchUp product, widely used by individuals and organizations, was being sold through an aging e‑commerce platform nearing obsolescence. The legacy system’s tightly coupled, built‑in storefront made customization difficult and did not support flexible channels such as in‑app purchases.

To modernize, Trimble chose to deploy the headless version of Elastic Path Commerce, leveraging its true headless architecture and robust REST APIs. The new platform would initially coexist with the legacy solution, with a phased migration of the product catalog.

Trimble first engaged a large GSI to implement the new platform. Although the initial launch was functional, the limited Elastic Path experience the GIS had, led to an implementation that hindered the addition of new features and proved challenging to maintain in production.

What We Did

Data Realm was brought in post‑launch to provide technical leadership and development across both the legacy commerce platform and the new headless Elastic Path system. We embedded with Trimble’s technical team, gradually assuming greater responsibility as internal resources shifted and our understanding of the business deepened. Over time, we became experts not only in Trimble’s e‑commerce stack but also in its specific domain and use cases.

To address maintainability and reliability issues in the initial build, we:

  • Refactored significant portions of the platform to improve code quality and flexibility.

  • Implemented a comprehensive automated test suite to increase confidence in changes and reduce regressions.

  • Significantly improved overall system performance, supporting faster, safer delivery of new capabilities.

Because we are engaged across the organization, we can identify patterns that affect multiple business units and propose solutions that deliver benefits beyond our immediate stakeholders, improving outcomes for the broader business.

What began as implementation support became long-term strategic guidance, influencing product and technology decisions and propagating patterns that lifted results organization-wide.

The engagement strengthened platform reliability and delivery velocity. This improved and simplified operational effectiveness within the ecommerce team, allowing them to focus on advancing the business.

Separating the front end from the commerce engine allowed teams to work with greater independence and flexibility, launch new channels faster, and plug in best-of-breed services via APIs. It can boost performance and scalability and while letting companies modernize in phases.
